IPCS organized a conference on India-Bangladesh relations with the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, H.E. Tariq Ahmad Karim. Describing the Joint Communiqué signed between India and Bangladesh during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi in January 2010 as historic, the High Commissioner elaborated upon the various issues included in the Communique from terrorism, border and security issues to climate change, trade, water, culture and energy. He emphasized the need for sustained engagement between India and Bangladesh for effective implementation and follow-up action on the Communique. He cautioned against the various challenges facing the two nations in their efforts to forge closer ties including historical legacy and fragile political systems, and stressed upon the importance of mutual understanding and patience. Finally, he further emphasized on sub-regional cooperation within SAARC as having greater potential for effecting stability in the region.
