Lalatendu Sahoo analyzes prospects and problems of J & K’s Trifurcation
The RSS has demanded the trifurcation of J & K into a Hindu dominated Jammu region, Muslim majority Kashmir valley and the Buddhist Ladakh area. The VHP has gone one step ahead by demanding a separate administrative unit for Kashmiri Pandits – making it a Union Territory. But this modality would have a great impact on J&K in particular, and on India in general.
Arguments in Favour of the Idea
There is a widespread feeling within the Jammu and Leh regions of deprivation and political and economic discrimination by Kashmir politicians. This prudent solution is fuelled by regional tensions heightened by the recommendations of the RAC (Regional Autonomy Committee), SAC (State Autonomy Committee) and the controversial Kashmir Study Group Report entitled, ‘Kashmir: A Way Forward’.
In the words of Dr Karan Singh, “J and K is the only state with two names – Jammu and Kashmir; two capitals – Jammu and Srinagar; and three languages – Kashmiri, Ladakhi and Dogri. There is nothing common. Kashmiriyat is distinctively different from Dogriyat and Ladakhiyat.â€Â
