DB Manisha draws attention to the failure to douse the coalmine fire in Jharia and its adverse implications for India’s energy security


Even as the crude petroleum import bill for India increased by 74 per cent between 1997-98 and 2001-02, from Rs 15,872 crores to Rs 60,397 crores, 70 coal mines in Jharia, Jharkhand keep burning. While this fire has already consumed 42 million tones of India’s best coking coal, 1,864 million tones are still out of bound due to fire.
